Summary

ne2, OŠ Antona Ingoliča Spodnja Polskava, Slovenia

We are Eco school - Are you ECO school too?

Does your school remind you to save water, turn off the lights and recycle?

                            - Do you try to save as much water as you can?

                            - Do you turn off the lights when you don't need them?

                            - Do you collect old paper or plastic cups and bottles and recycle them?

What else do you do / could we do?

Does your school try to save the planet?

We are thankful to everyone of your excellent answers. All of your opinions and actions are similar to ours. We are glad that all of you try to be eco-friendly.  With your answers, we have learned quite a lot.

All of you, as well as we, have got many posters that remind you to save the planet. We are happy to know, that your schools are dealing with the question about recycling with different ideas.

In Ukraine they have lessons that teach them how to be eco.

Bangladesh struggles with the recycling idea, but tries its best.

Romania: Liceul Teoretic Nicolae Iorga and Hasdeu Buzau have Tree days, which means they plant trees. The first Romanian school has a club, which collets light bulbs and batteries.

In Ukraine schools they are not ALLOWED to turn on the lights if it's not dark outside. We think that is quite smart. In that way our school acts stupid. We have got big windows on the ceiling and they are covered with window blinds that the sun does not shine in the lobby, and we turn on the lights instead to draw back the window blinds to let in the daylight .

Macedonia has got a special ECO flag, which reminds them to recycle. WE've got one too.

NE1: In Canada they try to be eco friendly, and they put up encouraging posters to tell the students it is better to turn your lights off and recycle. (We do that too.)

When wthey talk about saving water in class, most people say they turn of taps and don’t leave water running while brushing their teeth.

In 2012 26.8% of Canadians recycled. They recycicle things like we do (paper, plastic, metal...)There are 16 big recycling centers in Canada. They take their nature seriusly. They also have a law about it. If they catch you litering they give you a 2000$ findThey try to help the environment, but it takes more than one school to save the planet. That's true!

NE3: In Ukraine they are simmilar to us. They recycle , save as much water as they can. And turn off the lights when they don't need it (try to). Some homeless people in Ukraine collect the subject for recycling to earn money. They are trying to keep nature clean so they constantly take care of it.

NE4: XXX

NE5: In Bangladesh they try to save water but in their country people aren't awareness about saving water, because people don't think that this is their duty. The school tries to aware people about the environment. They reuse the old paper for making new one or some other things. I think they are trying to save the planet.

NE6: In Macedonia they have got a flag, which remindes them to save water, recycle, turn off the lights. They save with electricity because it is very expensive. They  collect old plastic bottles. They have got an ECO garden and a tree  day where kids plant some trees.

NE7: In Romania they try to collect everything: old paper, plastic bottles and they take care for the nature.

NE8: Romania: In their school the teachers teach about saving the environment. Like every other country they collecti old paper, bottles and recycle rubbish.

NE9: In Romania they  try to live with the nature and they are a perfekt ECO school they say. They  collect paper and recycle different things.

NE10: XXX

NE11: Slovenia (Hi!) They aren`t an ECO school but they try to bee eco-friendly. They save with energy (so they turn off the lights or do homework when the sun still shines), water and they recycle things.

NE12: The Romanian school is an Eco school too. They participate in different activities to collect old paper. They  plant trees and recycle. The statue in their city remindes the people to be ECO and it`s a part of Romania`s culture.

We like all of your ideas to be eco.

In short:

WE ALL try to save as much water as we can.
-WE turn off the lights when we don't need them.
-Most of US collect old paper.
-Most of US are ECO SCHOOLS.

We all try to save our planet.

ALL TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT!

Best wishes from Slovenia.

Have a great day!

Summary

ne3, Lyceum25, Ukraine

Summary.

Our questions were:

What is your attitude to Nuclear Power plants?

a) are there any in your country or city?

b) do you consider them to pollute the environment?

c) can your country exist without nuclear energy?

d) is the nuclear energy not only harmful but dangerous as well?

Thanks to all of you for the answers. Unfortunately, we haven’t got all the answers, but we got to know something, we hadn’t known before.

We see that our partners believe that nuclear power plants are dangerous and pollute the atmosphere due to the radiation. Though during some period of time nuclear power stations considered to be safe. In 1986 Chernobyl disaster showed  that nuclear energy can be extremely dangerous. Research data show that significant areas of agricultural and forest lands of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia will remain unsafe for a man for eight thousand years.

All Learning Circle participants understand the importance and benefit of nuclear power for industry and conveniences for people’s lives. However, they see all the disadvantages of it. Accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima prove it. The explosion at Chernobyl is still affecting today. There were and are many people who have died and are dying of cancer because of it.

But the use of radiation under controlled conditions may have beneficial effects on humans. Radiation can be used in medical treatment(to kill cancer cells), diagnostic(ragiography), food industry(food preservation) and pharmaceutical industry(sterilization of surgical instruments) etc.

Not every country has nuclear power stations and some want to close them.

As to Ukraine there are a lot of them in our country and we still can’t avoid without them. There are also thermal power plants in Ukraine, but they are also a great source of pollution.

All our partners believe that the natural sources of energy like the energy of the sun, wind etc. are the way out. We are sure in the future scientists will discover some new sources of energy and they will be safe.

ne5, Udayan Uchya Madhaymik Biddayalaya, Bangladesh

Our questions were:

  • What do you do to prevent cutting of trees?
  • What do you do to save trees?
  • Do you have any plan about planting more trees?

Summary: Most of the countries are very much conscious of trees and forests. They prevent cutting down trees. Trees shouldn’t be cut down. In Slovenia 62.8% —or about 1,264,000 hectares—of Slovenia is forested. Of this, 9.4% —or roughly 119,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most  bioodiverse form of forest They can’t cut trees. It's against the law to cut trees . They need a permission for cutting trees. To prevent the unnecessary cutting of trees they  have to use paper wisely and not waste it in vain.

In Ukraine they have vast and thick forests in the Carpathians. They know about the organization Greenpeace. They have an idea to form little Greenpeace in every town and city. Besides, they must plant and replant forests and parks. As to acid rains they do harm to the forests,  that is why their government must pay attention to the problems of protecting their environment. It is clear as a day, that the factories and plants must be reconstructed not to throw the waste into the air. They have a little life experience and we can’t make up a plan of planting forests and parks. They think, that nature has its rights and it is a duty of a man to respect and defend these rights.

By the way, ordinary people of their country participate in different events to protect the environment. They have cleaning days, usually in spring. People plant trees in the streets, parks, yards (the yards in Ukraine are very green. There are a lot of fruit trees: apple-trees, pear-trees, cherry-trees, apricot-trees, plum-trees and others). They even plant new forests, unfortunately, they grow slower, than they are cut-down.

In Macedonia every year government organize "Day of a tree" and people actively participate in planting of more trees. Mostly they can't do much, but they are doing what they can. They collect papers (old books, news paper, notebooks...) and giving it for recycling.

Deforestation is one of Romania’s most severe problem. For example, at the end of XIX centuries, Romania’s territory was covered in proportion of 80% with forests. In 2008, there were forests in proportion of only 25%. Some people, like us, do campaigns to inform other people that it is not good to cut so many trees, because without them human being wouldn’t have air and die. In addition, they try to plant more and more trees and not to use too much paper.

For saving trees we can join at charity actions. We join at charity actions

Although  we see how forests are cut to build houses, factories, furniture, fire woods or other things, we should take some measures. For example, we should plant more and more trees to have more green spaces. We mustn’t use fire in the forests because it could destroy them. Also, we should put as much trash cans as we can and boards that says “Do not throw trash!”. Beside the fact that we must plant new trees, we can also protect the existing ones. Usually, every forest has a lake nearby, and we should not allow it to be contaminated by toxic waste.

Less paper can be used to  prevent cutting of trees. Instead of buying the paper-back, an e-reader can be used . Volunteer activity can be done  to plant trees or donate to tree planting organizations.

Summary

ne6, St Kliment Ohridski Primary school, Macedonia

Hi, dear friends. We are students at St. Kliment Ohridski primary school from Macedonia.Thank you so much for your answers. We have learned a lot from your answers. And here are our summaries.

-Part 1. The effects of climate change

The effects of climate change is really big. Summers get hotter from year to year and this factor influences everything alive: plants, birds, animals and people. People who suffer from the sickness of cordial-vascular system often have heart attacks and other problems. The sea level will increase. The ice of the polar region will melt. The season of the earth will be disturbed.

-Part 2. Depletion of ozone

The Ozon is destroyed very much, therefore the UV rays can harm the people and nature around us.If you stay too much in the powerful rays of the Sun, you can get a sunburn, hurt your eyes (your corneas), get a sunstroke or, in very severe cases, you can get skin cancer. Studies have shown that almost 90% of skin cancer cases appear in sun-exposed areas. We can prevent those negative effects by using moderation: if we don’t stay in the sun at dangerous times (in the middle of the summer days) or by using sun cream and sunglasses. We should not burn woods, we should try to limit the use of burning oil in vehicles. We should be careful about burning fossil fuels.

Each one of us can help but the change will happen when the leading countries will step together.

-Part 3. Acidification

Acidification is not only the result of motor vehicles. Gases and chemicals mix with water in the air. The mixture travels for hundreds of miles and finally falls back to earth.

Certainly cars are very harmful too. Every time your car is being used, dangerous chemicals like carbon monoxide and nitrogen are pumped into the atmosphere. To improve the situation, we think, humanity should use different kinds of transport, which doesn’t need fuel. People should try to use natural sources of energy: wind, sun biofuel.

Summary

ne7, Liceul Teoretic Nicolae Iorga, Romania

     Hello again!

We saw your great answers! We read them and we think that almost all the countries have the same problem: pollution, but, at the same time, they try to do their best to resolve this problem.

Why does pollution appear? Because of the substances which are emitted by cars, as ne11 said, the nuclear energy which is unsafe and an example is the accident which happened at Cernobîl Power Plant in Ukraine, in 1986, which “influenced people’s health and life: a lot of people got sick with cancer and leukemia, so many people died after that”, said ne3 in their answer and, in addition, “power plants pollute the air”, said ne6, the waters and the soil.

How can we stop pollution? “We can take part in the cleaning of the streets, squares and nearby territories.” said ne3, “We need to plant as more trees as we can.” answered ne5, “We can switch off the lights when we don't need them, save water and reduce the use of cars by using the public transport, bicycles and walking.” responded ne2. But the most common activity is recycling the rubbish.

In conclusion, we think that pollution is a very big problem at international level, but people try to resolve it. We thank you for all the information that you gave to us in your answers and we hope that the environment would be saved by us, people, because without it everything will disappear.

Best wishes,

Summary

ne8, Colegiul Economic Buzau, Romania, Cercel Carmen

We understand at you how important is the environment. Is very nice that în Canada are a total of 19 acts and legislations to protect the environment. In Canada exists 16 recycling centres, were are recycling plastic, paper, bottles, food waste, batteries, old electronics, glass bulbs, clothing, toys and cardboard. It's very good that You want to teach the people who don't care about it. Some of you walk or go to school or shops by bycicle, this think is a good lesson. In Macedonia, all citizens are actively involve in planting trees for " Day of the tree". In this action are involved and teenagers. We saw that in Macedonia is only plastic recyclable, glass bottles are transfered to Croația. You really want to plan many trees an you will do this soon again.

Teenagers participate în events aimed at sensitizing society în this objective; they promote the companies taking a grater interest in the ecomomy of resources used in their activiteis.

The inhabitants in general preserve natural sources and save energy because all of us can reuse the garbage. In order to stop the environment colapsing you are trying to: respinsibly treat hozardous chemicals, subtitute the fuels with the ones that don't pollute our environment, use that products that produce less dangerous garbage, use means of transport that produce less exhoust fumes, separate and recycle garbage. You use renewable sources, and you have many  secured areas. You also have gardening as an after school activity where you learn about the importance of local or own production of food. And you make all of this to protect the environment from colapsing a very important think.

Question:What measures do people take in order to save the environment in your country?

School:

Summary:

Ne2, OŠ AntonaIngoličaSpodnjaPolskava, Slovenia

There are some laws in Slovenia to protect the environment: The Environmental Protection Law, The Order about Waste Management,...

In their country have been organized a lot of collecting campaigns for many years. They've been collecting paper, plastic and glass bottles for recycling, dangerous waste, furniture...They've been cleaning the rivers and planting trees.

Ne3, Lyceum25, Ukraine

All kinds of environmental problems threaten mankind and nature, reduce our life, even kill people. That’s why people all over the world fight against pollution for survival on the earth.

It’s clear that it’s necessary to use purification equipment at the plants, and that more natural resources should be used.

A positive factor for keeping the planet clean is regular cleaning of the streets, parks, woods. It’s the duty of school children to regularly participate in the cleaning.

It would be good if people preferred going by bicycles but not by cars, which are very dangerous for people, wildlife and the environment.

Ne6, St KlimentOhridski Primary school, Macedonia

In their country every year they plant trees in spring and in autumn. They don’t cut trees; they recycle plastic, glass, paper... They put filters on chimneys of factories, for cleaner air and try to use bus more than cars. In their country they don't have nuclear power plants.

Ne7,LiceulTeoreticNicolaeIorga, Romania

People who are trying to save the environment are few, but in their school many people are trying  to recycle paper, plastic and other things. We have a Recycling Patrol in our school which won a very important prize, because this Patrol reached a big quantity of recycled paper, numerous electronic household broken products, batteries, plastic bottles etc. At the moment, they are participating in Kaufland Olympics which promotes recycling and healthy lives, so they made dresses of bottles, plastic foils, plastic bags etc., collected waste thrown in the river and planted trees.

Ne8,Colegiul Economic Buzau, Romania, Cercel Carmen

To save the environment we recycle plastic, papers, bottles, we plant trees, we stop deforestation.

Ne11 OŠ Naklo, Slovenia

In order to stop the environment from collapsing they are trying to:

Responsibly treat hazardous chemicals

They avoid their use  or  take care that they don't pollute the environment. They make sure that when the use-by date is expired, they deliver them to the people that are qualified to work with them and deal with them in the proper way.

They substitute the fuels with the ones that don't pollute the  environment.

They use burning devices that enable better burning of the fuel. They substitute heating oil with natural gas.

They use the products that produce less dangerous garbage

They use biologically decomposable means in households that have the same purpose, except that they pollute the environment less.

Ne12, National College BP Hasdeu, Buzau, Romania

Different categories of ecosystem services tend to change in my country, making it difficult for managers to evaluate trade-offs fully. The degradation of ecosystem services represents a loss of a capital asset. Both renewable resources such as ecosystem services and nonrenewable resources such as mineral deposits, soil nutrients, and fossil fuels are capital assets.

Summary

ne11, OŠ Naklo, Slovenia

Hello from Slovenia!

Our summary was made by two groups.

Below is a summary made by a group of boys.

We asked students our questions because we wanted to know how students think they could save the environment and what they do not to destroy it.

Before we started to talk about the theme we knew that we must recycle waste and try not to destroy biodiversity. We also knew that as individuals we must travel by buses and trains or even better by eco-friendly means of transport and not by cars .

In our classroom we talked about saving the environment and we went on a trip to a near-by village called Duplje, where we watched and researched water resources and animals that live in the water.

We expected to learn how to treat animals in water resources and how to protect them - how to let them live in their environment.

We have learnt from the responses of the students how they save their environment and how they protect animals and do not pollute air and water resources. Students in our Learning circle do not think they have to give up all luxuries for the sake of environment, but just some of them.

Students learnt how to work with biotechnology and genetic engineering. Students from the Learning Circle made devices in their country, they have learnt new things about the environment and how to keep it clean.

Differences exist, because we live in different places, cities, villages and countries; because they learn different things in school about the environment; because we think differently.

And here is the summary made by a group of girls. They focused on the answers written by the Romanian schools.

We asked our project partner schools around the world a few questions to help us make our school projects. We also asked them because we wanted to hear their opinion.

In the beginning we knew a few things about the theme but we wanted to learn more so now when we received the answers we learned some new facts.

We asked them: What are the consequences of people influencing on water sources in your town/country?

And they answered:

In Romania there are mainly artificial lakes and reservoirs. The artificial lakes cause flooding. Due to artificial sources of water, digging and changing the river flow, can lead to flooding and dismantling bridges. Pollution is the result from companies and people. Companies are polluting by discarding the water. Water sources are contaminated daily because of negligence and defects. People think that if we put chlorine into the water, that the water is cleaner but it's really even more polluted.

The next question was: Do young people really have to give up all luxuries for the sake of environment? Where is the balance between the responsibility towards the environment and our luxury?

Their answer:

Young people do not need to give up the luxuries. Church teaches them that God has created the world that can be used on their own. Over time, the nature regenerates. People do not give up luxuries, they try as much as possible to avoid the nature to get away from responsibilities. Those who have a small living, they do not matter for luxury, because they will remain there until the end. Young people don't have to give up all luxuries, because you can protect the environment in other ways and they can still keep the luxury. The key is to not use too much comfort, and to not sacrifice too much environment. The balance between luxury and the environment is very important as we think about luxury and not about what damage we have done. So we must look for luxury without damaging nature.

The last question was: How do biotechnology and genetic engineering influence biodiversity in your town/country?

Answer:

Biotechnology in Romania does not affect badly on biodiversity. The impact of biodiversity in their country is very positive because biotechnology is helping the environment without damaging it. Genetic engineering is a set of working methods which moved the genetic material at the molecular and cellular level. This profession is very important because it is the main source of money. Some institutions, which are dealing with this are: RO AGG, InCD Bradsov, University ALI.I., Cuza Iasi, University of Medicine and Pharmacy GR.TH.POPA. Genetic engineering has a positive influence on biodiversity, because in any case the plants are the result of genetic mutation. The more green plants there are, the more it is enjoyable.

The answers were a little bit different than ours because we live in different countries in different places. Maybe some of them live in a city and we live in the countryside.

We received the biggest difference in answers for the second question. Some students don't want to give up their luxuries for the sake of nature, but we think that in some cases, it is better to give up all the luxuries since it is more important to save nature.

However, we agree with Liceul Teoretic Nicolae Iorga, Romania that it is up to us to try and protect the environment as much as we can or else everything will disappear.

Thank you all for your answers which helped us a great deal and gave us new insights into this topic.

Best wishes from Slovenia.

Summary

We usually clean litter from our forests and we also have day ECO in many schools, so we inform the students that nature needs us.

Of course you need to save the forests, because if there are no trees, there are no people, huh? Trees produce oxygen for people to breathe, that trees are highly important.

Cutting of trees is not good for nature, animals that live there and for the neighborhood. We are trying to save our forests and we have plans to plant more trees in the future.

It is illegal to cut trees after our heads. You need a document to allow you to cut trees.

Just think how trees and forests affects our lives.

The forests play an important role in our lives, from the air we breathe it out up to the seat that you sit.

It is very difficult to say in a few words the importance of forests. Furthermore, all the animals, birds, fish and insects may disappear because of pollution, vanarii and the environment itself. Every year, people cut more trees, build more streets, uses more land for agriculture and are therefore fewer forests and other wild places of the livings.
